He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with a Minor in Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He completed postdoctoral research under Prof. Peter G. Schultz at UC Berkeley and the Scripps Research Institute. Currently, he is a Professor of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University.
